Support Staff Full-time New Position
(First consideration for Support Staff and Academic positions will be given to internal applicants in accordance with the respective Collective Agreements)
The Student Engagement Programmer is an active member of the Student Engagement team and works collaboratively with team members to develop, design, deliver and evaluate programs that foster a sense of belonging and inclusion, cultivate student leadership and development, promotes community and civic engagement, and support student transition to the College.
Assigned portfolios may include but are not limited to working collaboratively with community and College partners to develop and implement programming to meet the diverse needs of students, researching best practices, and consulting and coaching student leaders. The Student Engagement Programmer applies student development theory to design, plan and coordinate initiatives that enhance the student's sense of belonging, inclusion, and community.
The Student Engagement Programmer develops and coordinates methods to involve students in on and off-campus community engagement and volunteering opportunities while providing guidance and skills development coaching to student staff. In consultation with Student Engagement management, the student engagement programmer implements program evaluation and continuous improvement strategies for all initiatives in their portfolio.
Successful candidates will be required to conduct work within Ontario and must be available to work on campus as required. It is anticipated that this position will meet the needs of the department through a hybrid work arrangement with 3 days on-site, and 2 days remote.
Responsibilities:
- Developing and delivering programming to increase the sense of inclusion and belonging for students with a focus on Apprenticeship, Trade and Engineering students
- Recruiting and supporting a student advisory committee to provide input on program development, delivery, and inclusionary practices for skilled trades/engineering students.
- Participating in recruiting, hiring, training, coaching, and providing formal and informal feedback to students in paid positions (e.g. Student Ambassadors, Peer Inclusion Leader).
- Developing, organizing, and executing programming and events that promote and explore diversity and inclusion in collaboration with students in both paid and unpaid positions
- In collaboration with other college areas (i.e. Campus Manager, Academics, Conestoga Students Inc., Security Services, Student Rights and Responsibilities Office, etc.), planning and executing a coordinated approach to foster a welcoming, respectful, inclusive, and equitable learning environment through various mediums (e.g. consistent messaging, resources, promotional materials, educational initiatives, etc.)
- Maintaining records and statistics, analysing quantitative and qualitative statistical data, evaluating the effectiveness of initiative against defined outcomes, developing reports, and making recommendations that target continuous improvement
- Coordinating and supporting volunteer Student Committee(s) as identified in the Student Engagement Department Annual Activity Plan
- Participating in recruiting, training, scheduling, and supporting student volunteer positions as identified in the Student Engagement Department Annual Activity Plan (e.g. Student Engagement Volunteers).
- Providing formal and informal recognition to paid and unpaid Student Leaders
- Organizing and coordinating the logistics of the event (e.g. scheduling, room booking, work requests, etc.)
- Remaining up to date on risk management policies and practices and utilizing knowledge to support safe and inclusive programming
- Creating partnerships with faculty to engage programs/courses in event execution and participation
- Liaising with internal and external service providers to establish and support event participation
- Creating drop-in engagement activities, educational and co-curricular events
- Coordinating promotion in accordance with the Student Engagement marketing plan
- Promoting Student Engagement initiatives during College events
- Delivering workshops, specifically related to the topics of Leadership
- Researching best practice models used outside of the College
Qualifications:
- Three-Year Diploma/Degree in Community Development, Education, Student Development, Skilled Trades, Engineering, Technology, Sociology, or related field
- Three years of experience working with individuals in a community, educational development capacity, preferably within an educational setting
- Experience working with culturally diverse and equity-deserving learners
- Experience developing collaborative working relationships with learners and professionals in the skilled trades and/or engineering fields
- Experience advising, leading, motivating, and guiding student staff or volunteers
- Experience developing and facilitating experiential workshops, specifically related to the topics of leadership and equity, diversity and inclusion
- Substantial knowledge of and practical experience working with event planning/managing and risk management processes
- Demonstrated ability to evaluate and apply literature, research, institutional data, and theoretical frameworks to establish evidence and outcomes-based programs and services
- Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations (as defined in the Human Rights Charter) and ability to facilitate discussions around diversity, discrimination, anti-racism, and inclusion
- Excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution, and emotional intelligence skills to develop and maintain collaborative partnerships with internal and external community stakeholders
- Strong judgment, agility, and adaptability
- Strong aptitude for written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated commitment to client service, specifically students, staff, and external contacts
- Intermediate to advanced level Microsoft365, MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are also required
- Access to reliable transportation and the ability to travel to multiple locations
- Must be available to work evenings and some weekends
